Porsche 997 lives on with GT3 Cup version

Porsche is ready to launch its all-new 911, code-named 991, at the Frankfurt Motor Show. That means that the former model, the 997, will immediately be rendered obsolete, right?

Well, yes and no. The production version will, of course, be replaced by the 991. But Porsche has decided to keep the world’s most popular car for customer racers all around the world, the 911 GT3 Cup, based on the 997 until at least 2013.

The 911 GT3 Cup is based on the GT3 RS production car, sharing its 3.8 flat-six engine and the 450HP maximum power. Even its racing wheel is adjustable in height and reach, as in the production car, while the exhaust system features a specially developed catalytic converter for reduced CO2 emissions.

The most notable change for the updated 911 GT3 Cup is the new, 100-lt FT3 safety fuel tank, which gives the car greater range in endurance races. The new racer also has adjustable front and rear anti-roll bars, and the Mobil 1 Supercup models that follow the Formula 1 championship get exclusive use of the 20 kg lighter Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes (PCCB). The 911 GT3 Cup is priced at €161,750, excluding taxes.
